2021 Vintage Report

Experiencing two incredibly difficult Vintages in a row (2019 & 2020). We were all hoping and praying for a little more rain and to get back to some average cropping levels.

Things started a lot like the previous 2 harvests until the heavens opened up towards the end of August bringing fantastic winter and spring rains which set grower and winemaker up for delightful season.

Although soil moistures were good we still weren’t able to refill most of the dams throughout our region; that being said vineyards were looking incredibly healthy and we managed to dodge most of the frost incidents in late September.

We experienced solid flowering conditions with less windy days and no punishing heat spells; in fact by December summer had really shown it’s hotter side and we went straight into a prolonged dry Indian Summer. With no disease pressure to speak of we could quite easily pick at our leisure.

At Tomfoolery it was the story of two harvests we picked Pinot Gris, Riesling and our Cabernet Franc for Rose by the middle of February and played the waiting game for the majority of the rest of the 2021 crush completed Tuesday the 27th April.

Overall the harvest is an absolute stunner! Colours are fabulous, aromatics and natural acidity make the 2021 Vintage one which will be talked about for a long time - think 2002.
